ROC BOY CELEBRATES HIS 28th B-DAY

Words by Keziah and T. Ruiz

On November 19, at a the posh Club Cain in New York City, sporting girlfriend Julissa Bermudez (BET’s first Latina host) on his arm, Larry Johnson of the Kansas City Chiefs made a grand entrance as he prepared to celebrate his 28th birthday bash. A very close friend of rap mogul Jay Z, Johnson, who recently made a cameo appearance in Jay Z’s “Roc Boys” video, was sporting not one, but three hefty diamond encrusted “Roc-a-fella” pendants (Jay-Z’s record label imprint), dangling from his two platinum necklaces. Johnson, known for flashing "The Roc" symbol whenever he scores a rushing touchdown, made the first appearance of this gesture after he scored a touchdown in a game on December 4, 2005 (which also happens to be Jay-Z's birthday). This symbol is made with both palms facing out and both thumbs touching together and both index fingers together. Interestingly, the symbol also resembles his initials L.J. Recently Johnson signed a contract with the Team Roc clothing line founded by Jay-Z. When TSA Report asked Johnson, what was at the top of his birthday wish list he enthusiastically replied, “Just to enjoy it and make it more memorable than the last!” The 6-foot-1 running back, who is noted as the highest paid in his position, was feeling exceptionally good about how the big apple embraced him. “A lot of people came out and showed love and I’m not even from New York,” he said. “But it still feels like home and that’s what’s up!” Julissa also expressed her surprise and content with the massive turnout. “This is crazy,” she said. “He’s not from New York but he’s dating a girl from Queens so we have to show him some love!” Later during the week we caught up with the two-time Pro-Bowler and asked about his development and ability to flourish under Head Coach Herman Edwards (former head coach of the NY Jets) “It’s been great! It’s easy to follow a leader when they’ve also played the sport too,” he said of Edwards who was traded to the Chiefs at the beginning of Johnson's third season with the team in 2006, at which time he broke the NFL record for most carries in a season. In addition to appearing in “The Roc Boys” video, Johnson also acted as the love interest of platinum selling R&B songstress Fantasia in her “When I See You” video. When asked if we can look forward to a music career in the near future, Johnson said, “I would lean more toward acting because I’d like to see myself in uniforms other than just a football jersey.” From setting league records, to achieving Kansas City Chiefs MVP status, having a running style compared to Jim Brown, presiding over the NASDAQ Stock Market opening bell ceremony, and being one the NFL’s top rushers, where does Larry Johnson go from here? “It’s like Jay-Z’s last album,” he says. “I want to go to Kingdom Come.”

Marcus Spears
Team: Dallas Cowboys –No. 96
Position: Defensive End
Date Of birth: March 8, 1983 (Age 24)
Place of Birth: Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Height: 6 ft 4in
Weight: 305 lbs (138 kg)
Career History- College: Louisiana State
NFL Draft: 2005/ Round: 1/Pick 20

TSAReport.com : So how do you feel about your team’s success this season?

Marcus Spears
: I’m feeling good about it. We’re doing some good things. We’re 12-1. It’s always good when you’re controlling your own destiny. That’s a positive thing. We think we can do a lot better then we’ve been doing. But what we’ve been doing has been working for us.

TSAReport.com : Tell me about the Marcus Spears Foundation. I heard your last function that your organization did was the talk of the town.

MS : This year we started The Marcus Spears Foundation Turn Around House Campaign 2007. We had an exclusive gala this year in Dallas. A lot of my teammates participated. The proceeds provided homes, financial assistance and food for needy families in the Dallas community. Our focus is on single mothers, the homeless and underprivileged children. I think all of that really falls under one category. My mom was a single parent. I know how tough it was for us to be able to maintain bills and do things the right way. I want to help as many people as I can because that’s what I should do. Early next year we’ll be doing another gala to raise proceeds for that cause. Last year I had a camp in Baton Rouge. It was a success. LSU let us use their facilities. We had 300 kids from Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas come in. We did a day camp and the kids got a chance to meet some NFL stars. It was a lot fun.

TSAReport.com : It seems like a growing trend amongst athletes to become involved in the music business. Is that the case with you?

MS : Not really. My cousin dabbles with it a little bit. I try to freestyle a little bit, but I’m not thinking about starting a record label or becoming the next Jay or nothing like that.

TSAReport.com : So if someone asked you to spit a freestyle right now what would you say?

MS : [laughs]. It’s really whatever my setting is. If we’re in the locker room we might start freestylin’ if we heard a beat, or if my cousin plays a beat I might throw something off that. But just sitting around…if you asked me to spit something for you right now I couldn’t spit nothing for you.

TSAReport.com : What rappers are you feeling right now?

MS : I’m a big Lil’ Boosie fan. He’s from my hometown. I think Lil’ Wayne is the hottest rapper right now. That “Drought 4” mixtape he just came out with is hot so that stays pumping in my whip. There are a lot of kats that I like. But those two are mostly who I rock to.

TSAReport.com : What do you do on your spare time?

MS : Play Madden. I love hunting and fishing. I got a little nine month old girl, so we hang out pretty tough.

TSAReport.com : Are you into automotives?

MS : I love whips I got a ’64 Impala, I got that Lexus 460L and I got a Escalade ESV. I’ll probably get a Lincoln Continental, but it’ll probably be a minute before I get that.

TSAReport.com : Obviously, there’s been a lot of talk lately about the killing of Sean Taylor, which was a terrible tragedy, what are your thoughts on that?

MS
: I didn’t know him personally. I heard a lot about him from guys that played with him. I played with LaRon Landers who plays with the Redskins now. He was excited about going out there and playing with Sean because he knew he would help him be a better player. It’s tough, man. When you’re in the limelight and people talk about how much money you make and the kind of things that we do, sometimes it attracts the wrong kind of people. You realize as time goes that you gotta be very careful. You wanna tell guys to be safe and don’t do things. But when guys are sitting in your home, you don't think that type of thing is going to happen-but in turn it does. It’s a tough situation. I know there are a lot of people that depended on Sean. He was a good guy. He made a transition in his life and started doing great thing. For his life to be cut short like that is tough.

TSAReport.com : There’s been a lot of talk about athletes possibly bringing upon these robberies and things of that nature themselves because of the flashy lifestyle they often live…

MS : You got to live your life. We’re fortunate enough to do things that most people aren’t able to do and there’s no need to apologize for that. But at the same time you just got to know that some people want what you have. It’s just like anything else. Success brings interest to what you do. Knowing that, you got to be cautious, more so than the average guy whose business isn’t on TV. It’s a double-edged sword. We chose this life. But there’s also a lot of responsibility that comes along with it. And there’s a lot of things in your lifestyle that have to change.

TSAReport.com
: There was a security consultant on TV the other day and he was commenting about athletes not wanting personal security…do you think it’s needed?

MS : In certain situations I think it’s needed. When you’re at home I don’t think personal security is needed. But when you’re going out somewhere or you’re alone, it might be a good idea. People have vendettas because of what we do, it’s apparent because situations like that are happening. But it costs a lot to have a security team. We’re pretty much average guys that were able to play sports and make some money at it. There are a few players in this league that probably need security 24 hours a day because they are like movie stars—other then that we don’t really need all that. We’re pretty much average guys that are good at sports and were able to make some money at it.

FINALLY THEY MEET
ROY JONES JR. VS. FELIX "TITO" TRINIDAD
JANUARY 19th 2008

Words by T. Ruiz

Roy Jones Jr., a former eight-time world champion in four separate weight classes, knows that when he steps into famed Madison Square Garden on January 19, to battle Felix “Tito” Trinidad, a former five-time world champion in three different weight classes, the crowd isn’t going to be in his favor. After the Trinidad vs. Hopkins outdoor afternoon Manhattan press conference at Bryant Park in 2001, it was nearly impossible for the Puerto Rican superstar to walk back into the HBO offices directly across the street from the park. Instead, he jolted away from the hundreds of Hispanic fans who were chasing after him as if he were Michael Jackson. However, Jones isn’t concerned with Trinidad’s popularity. “When you get an opportunity to fight a Tito Trinidad in MSG…I know most of the crowd is going be Latinos, but I don’t care,” he said during the N.Y.C. press conference. “They’re coming to see him fight so they got to watch the Roy Jones show. So it’s all good.” Jones (51 wins, 38 knockouts, 4 losses) has been on a two year winning streak with unanimous decision victories against fighters with less then half his experience, Prince Badi Ajamu (25 wins, 2 losses) in 2006 and the July defeat of Anthony Hanshaw (21 wins, 1 loss). Many feel that Jones, 38, will never be the elite fighter that he once was—especially after his seven year, 15 fight winning streak (nine by way of KO) came to a halt in 2004 when Antonio Tarver’s hard left knocked Jones out cold in the second round. In his preceding match versus Glen Johnson, he would again be KO’d. The subsequent Tarver rematch resulted in yet another L for the Pensacola, FL. native. But according to Jones he’s feeling brand new these days. “I haven’t felt this excited about a fight in a very long time. You haven’t seen me this pumped up in a long while. I have my fire and energy back. I don’t know how I lost it, but I know I got it back.” On the other hand Trinidad, 34, who called it quits after losing to Winky Wright in 2005, has fought at 140 lbs, 154 lbs and 160 lbs, but never at 170 lbs. However, entering fight No. 44 of his career, with only two losses, he assured the world that Jones will be his 35th knockout victim—confiding that the fight won’t go past round 2. “I don’t think fighting at 170 pounds is going to be a big deal,” he said. “The heaviest I’ve fought has been at 160 pounds. I’m a little older now so I carry my weight a lot better than I used to.” Trinidad, The President of Winky [Wright] Promotions Puerto Rico says he foresees the enormity of his anticipated win, also acknowledging his opponents’ accomplishments in boxing. “I respect Jones and the great career that he has had. I know he thinks he can beat me, but that’s not going to happen. This will be one of the biggest victories of my career.” Is Trinidad going to be exposed at 160 lbs? Or is “Mr. unstoppable,” an extremely comfortable and experienced light heavyweight hip-hopper going to eliminate Trinidad in round four as promised? On January 19th live on HBO pay-per-view live from The Garden, the truth will be revealed.
