IT’S SPRING SO IT MUST BE TIME FOR THE NBA PLAYOFFS

Words by Dave K. Far-El

If the first round of the 2009 NBA playoffs is any indication, the “league” is back. The NBA sported the most viewed playoff series ever when the reigning Champion Boston Celtics finally beat a young Chicago Bulls squad in seven games. There was a total of seven overtimes played in this series and only one blow out victory. Being the champions they are, the Celtics – minus an injured Kevin Garnett – rallied past the Bulls. The other upset was the 6-seed Dallas Mavericks beating the San Antonio Spurs. In reality, it wasn’t that much of a surprise considering Mr. Duncan was hobbled with bad knees and Manu Ginobli was out because of ankle surgery. League MVP Lebron James and his band of Cavaliers sent the Detroit Pistons packing in four games. It looks like, in the short term at least, the Chauncey Billups trade worked out better for Denver than it did Detroit.

Speaking of Denver, the Nuggets handed the New Orleans Hornets a 58-point beatdown at one point in this brief series and advanced to the second round for the first time in years. The Houston Rockets seem better off without Tracy McGrady, as Yao Ming and Ron Artest led the Rockets to a first round series win over a young Trailblazers team. The Orlando Magic with major assistance from “Superman” Dwight Howard went two games longer than they wanted to against a tough yet undermanned Philadelphia 76ers squad on their way to a 4-2 series win. Not to mention that four out of the six games they played were won with last second shots. The only reason people didn’t get wind of this is because the Chicago/Boston series was that much better. but in any other year it may have been the first five games of this series that captured everyone’s attention. Of course the L.A. Lakers easily moved on to the second round and it really doesn’t matter who they beat to get there. Finally, the Atlanta Hawks took care of the Miami Heat in another 7-game thriller.

I’m pretty sure David Stern will be more than happy when the overall NBA Playoff ratings come in. Now our only hope is that the second round of the NBA Playoffs is half as good as the first. Bring on Spring…and more NBA Playoff action!

  To the top

So, the 2009-10 Major League Baseball season is underway which should be great news for baseball purists and lovers. Yet, once again, the spectre of steroid use from one of the league’s biggest stars dominates the front pages. New York Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez was outed as a user of HGH (Human Growth Hormone) during the 2003-2004 season while with the Texas Rangers. This much we already know. He has since apologized, and is currently rehabbing from hip surgery, while his “billion” dollar Yankees flounder in an attempt to find themselves. Just as things surrounding A-Rod and his admitted HGH use begin to die down, Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts drops a tell all book about Mr. Rodriguez, “A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez.” In the book, she alleges that A-Rod had an infatuation with teammate Derek Jeter. She also alleges that A-Rod has been using HGH since high school. There are many other allegations in the book, but these are the two that garnered the most attention. I am one for good, constructive, investigative journalism but at what point does it get to be too much? Alex Rodriguez has admitted his past transgressions. I wonder what good it does to bring up past indiscretions such as those above? At what point does good, constructive journalism become a Frankenstein that overwhelms everything in it’s path?

Speaking strictly from a fan’s perspective, I have to say that I could care less what A-Rod did back in high school. That was back in the 90’s. There is no way he could’ve been taking steroids for this amount of time and still be healthy enough to play baseball at the highest level. I kind of care about his obsession with Jeter, but only because it is humorous. What I care more about is the possible effect something like this could have on Alex and Derek’s on-field chemistry. I live in New York so I have heard about every Madonna rumor involving A-Rod there is. I doubt if there is anything in the book regarding locker room banter more true than former Yankee skipper Joe Torre’s book, “The Yankee Years.” The only allegation that really caught my attention was the “pitch tipping.” She claims that if he was in a slump, he would help his friends out on the opposing team by “tipping” them off to what pitch was coming next. All of this in hopes that when it was his turn to bat, the opposing player, whom is his friend, would return the favor. I almost find that ludicrous and laughable. So needless to say I, as a fan, wish this issue would simply go away. I no longer care what happened in the past. All I know is I have a Yankee’s team that is overpaid and underachieving right now. Maybe we should all just take a deep breath and just enjoy what is supposed to be “America’s Favorite Past Time.”

I’LL SEE YOU IN COURT

Buffalo Bills defensive back Donte Whitner has pleaded not guilty to charges that he forced his way past police during an altercation at a Cleveland nightclub. Whitner was charged with aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police say they used a stun gun on the 23-year-old and handcuffed him when he tried to force his way past officers trying to control a crowd outside a nightclub on April 11. They say it was unclear why he was trying to leave the club and head for the melee outside. Since then, Whitner has apologized. Los Angeles Lakers’ point guard, Derek Fisher has been stalked and harassed by woman named Symone Fisher (no relation). Derek Fisher, who allegedly has been a victim of stalking and harassment, is seeking to obtain a temporary restraining order. In the documents, Derek Fisher claims Ms. Fisher has been harassing him since 2001, but the situation has gotten worse over the past few months. According to the information provided by Derek Fisher, he contends that the woman has been showing up at his work and at his private residence in Southern California. It has also been reported that in the restraining order, he also asked for protection for his wife, Candace, and four children. After looking into a number of unsolicited emails, internet messages and letters from Symone Fisher suggesting the two were married, a Los Angeles County detective investigating the case recommended that Fisher get a restraining order. Ice Hockey Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur has been convicted of giving contradictory evidence at his son's bail hearing and could face jail time. Quebec court Judge Claude Parent handed down the verdict and Lafleur, 57, is to be sentenced next month. The government is asking that Lafleur be given a conditional sentence, while the defense is seeking a fine. Lafleur faces a maximum prison sentence of 14 years. During a bail hearing in 2007, the National Hockey League legend said his son Mark would respect a court-mandated curfew but at a later hearing admitted his son had spent two nights in a motel, one the elder Lafleur drove him to himself. Mark Lafleur pleaded guilty last June to 14 charges, including assault with a weapon, making death threats, forced confinement, theft and dangerous driving. He was sentenced earlier this year to 15 months of house arrest. A Tennessee man is suing Washington Redskins’ defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, saying the All-Pro was driving his black Ferrari like a maniac when the player sent the man’s car crashing into the concrete median of an interstate highway and leaving him disabled. Corey Edmonson needed hip replacement surgery after the Dec. 13 accident, and attorney Jon Perry filed the lawsuit for Edmonson in Williamson County Circuit Court seeking $7.5 million in compensatory damages. Haynesworth’s agent did not immediately return an e-mail message. A Nashville attorney who represented Haynesworth on a previous traffic case did not return a message left with his office. The lawsuit also asks for punitive damages amounting to no less than 25 percent of Haynesworth’s guaranteed money from Washington. He set an NFL record when guaranteed $41 million in the seven-year, $100 million contract with the Redskins he signed Feb. 27. Haynesworth was indicted in March by a grand jury on charges of reckless driving and having an expired registration for the incident. Haynesworth was driving a black Ferrari when he tried to pass Edmonson’s car, which crashed into the concrete median on Interstate 65.

DID YOU KNOW

Costa Rican police are investigating claims by two photographers that they were shot at by bodyguards at the wedding of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Agence France-Presse photographer Yuri Cortes and Rolando Aviles of Costa Rican newspaper Al Dia claim Bundchen’s bodyguards tried to seize their cameras’ memory cards and shot at their car when they drove away. Nobody was hurt. Don Yee, Brady’s agent said security personnel reported having no knowledge of the incident. Someone got a bargain with Bernard Madoff’s Mets season tickets. The two seats in the Delta Club Gold section behind home plate auctioned for $38,100 on eBay, well below the list price for the pair of about $56,000. Frank Robinson was appointed special assistant to the MLB commissioner, a new role for the Hall of Famer who’s spent more than a half-century in baseball. The 73-year-old Robinson is the only player to win MVP awards in both leagues. The former outfielder also has been a major league manager, assistant general manager, and an executive in the commissioner’s office. The passenger injured in the car crash that killed Anaheim Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart had his status upgraded to fair and has been undergoing physical and speech therapy. Jon Wilhite, of Manhattan Beach, remains in intensive care at the UC Irvine Medical Center, but can move and is not paralyzed, hospital spokesman John Murray said. The owner of a minor league football team that offered Michael Vick a contract told a newspaper he didn’t know about the publicity stunt and would not have approved it. “I’m a dog lover and I don’t want anything to do with (Vick),” Albany Firebirds owner Walter Robb told The Times Union for a story posted on its Web site. Earlier, the arenafootball2 franchise announced it had offered the 28-year-old quarterback a one-year contract at the league standard: $200 a week plus a $50 bonus for a win. “That’s a joke,” Robb said. “Can you imagine him playing for $200 a week? I think (the offer) was a big mistake.” The announcement was later pulled from the team’s Web site. Firebirds general manager Garen Szablewski told The Times Union the team’s marketing department came up with the idea to make an offer to Vick. Former NBA star Jayson Williams was zapped with a stun gun by police in his swank hotel suite after the reported suicidal athlete resisted attempts by officers to take him to a hospital. Police were called to the hotel in lower Manhattan's Battery Park City neighborhood around 4 a.m. when a female friend reported the former New Jersey Nets player was acting suicidal. When officers arrived, the 6-foot-10, 325-pound Williams appeared drunk and agitated, police said. There were empty bottles of prescription drugs strewn around his disheveled hotel suite and several suicide notes. Officers with the Emergency Services Unit, an elite team trained to deal with emotionally disturbed people, responded and stunned Williams with a taser after he resisted attempts to be hospitalized. WWD reports that David Beckham will be designing a new line for Adidas. He’s just collaborated with James Bond, the owner of the boutique sneaker chain Undefeated. He and Beckham have teamed up to create a fall-winter men’s collection for Addidas. Beckham is a huge fan of the stores, and someone close to him thought it would be perfect if he did a line for Addidas. The collection will be under the Adidas Originals by Originals collection. Reports show that David's new line will be a combination of his take on American sportswear and a remixing of past Addidas designs. The collection features materials such as leather, cashmere and silk, while the footwear builds on iconic Adidas styles. The duo also developed accessories and thermal layering pieces. Somebody posing as a Washington Post reporter convinced ESPN that one of the Washington Capitals' star players had been suspended for the decisive Eastern Conference playoff Game 7 against the New York Rangers. "I was on my way to the rink this morning and my buddy called me and was a little upset I was missing Game 7," said Capitals defenseman Mike Green, a finalist for the Norris Trophy given to the NHL's top defenseman. "I had no idea what for. It kind of caught me off guard." ESPN SportsCenter hosts Josh Elliot and Hannah Storm relayed that Green and teammate Donald Brashear were suspended under a "Breaking News" banner Monday at 9:52 a.m. Within a half hour, ESPN retracted the story. A Delaware bankruptcy judge granted Magna Entertainment Corp.’s request for approval of its plan to sell several horse tracks and other assets. The plan approved by Judge Mary Walrath includes Santa Anita Park in California, Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Thistledown in Ohio and Portland Meadows in Oregon, as well as MEC’s interest in Lone Star Park in Texas. Ontario-based Magna, the largest horse track owner in the U.S., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March, saying it was unable to obtain new financing while supporting its existing debt. The sale plan calls for expressions of interest in any of the racetracks to be submitted by May 27, with definitive bids due by July 31. An auction will be held in New York City on Sept. 8, followed by a court hearing in Delaware three days later. Magna attorney Brian Rosen noted that the company might seek approval later to sell other assets currently not in the mix, including Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, home of the second jewel of the Triple Crown. Last week, MEC pulled Pimlico and its other Maryland assets, Laurel Park and a training center in Bowie, from the list of assets to be sold. Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James became the first player from his franchise to be named National Basketball Association's Most Valuable Player. The 24-year-old scored 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.2 assists on average per game in what is his sixth season in the NBA.

Ohio State University has sold the media rights for its sports programs in a 10-year deal guaranteeing the school $110 million to IMG College and RadiOhio. The New York Yankees cut the price of first-row Legends Suite seats in four sections on the outer half of the dugouts and photo cages from $2,500 to $1,250. In addition, 68 seats in the first row in the final three sections down each foul line were slashed from $1,000 to $650. New York also announced it would be giving free seats to those who bought season plans for seats costing $325 and up, with the number of free tickets depending on the price category. Many of those tickets might be getting dumped on the resale market. Lenders have renewed the NBA’s league-wide credit facility, from which 17 of its teams have borrowed $2 billion since it was established in 2003. The NBA said that approval of the credit by a group of banks led by J.P. Morgan shows confidence in its teams. Twelve teams were loaned between $13 million and $20 million this season when investors made additional money available despite the slumping economy.
