VENUS WILLIAMS OUT TO WIN BILLY JEAN KING CUP

"I don't know if that's greedy or not, you know, wanting [the Billy Jean Cup] over my own sister. But I can't help it." – Venus Williams

Words by T. Ruiz

After about 10 years of HBO not broadcasting tennis, and Madison Square Garden not showcasing any tennis events in nearly nine years, both are proud to host their return to the sport in a big way. Four of the world's top women tennis players, including 2008 Grand Slam Champions Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic, along with World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic will face off in a one-night only single elimination event which will also celebrate tennis legend Billie Jean King. The BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup is scheduled for Monday, March 2, 2009 and will be telecast live on HBO beginning at 7:30 p.m. EST.

"I only had one opportunity to play at Madison Square Garden and that was in '99," said Venus Williams during a recent phone conference before heading to Dubai to compete in the WTA Tennis Championships. "It was a beautiful experience. There was an unbelievable amount of tennis tradition for the women. I also understand that the men played championships at Madison Square Garden for a while too. And so it was kind of the pinnacle of the season, everyone was aiming for that. I feel honored to be playing there now for the Billie Jean King Cup."

Venus, who acknowledged her love for playing with and against her younger sibling says she hopes for an all-Williams finals. "I think that would be most exciting for us and hopefully for the fans too," she said. Whether she plays first or last to Venus it makes no difference. Like any topnotch athlete Venus has one goal, and that's winning. "I would love the cup to say Venus Williams. I don't know if that's greedy or not, you know wanting [the Billy Jean King Cup] over my own sister. But I can't help it."

Venus was also very adamant when asked about another popular subject brewing in the world of sports—steroids usage. "You know, I think with... tennis is a completely different sport," she said. "I think you can be not as strong and still be the winner. You have to hold your nerves and I don't know if there's a drug for that… I think tennis has a pretty good record and we continually test and as far as I know our sport has a very good integrity."

BRANDON BASS: MAKING THE BEST OF EVERY POSSESSION

Words by H.L.

Dallas Mavericks’ Power Forward Brandon Bass, not only strives for the best on the court, but off the court as well. While working hard at trying to achieve his goal of being the NBA’s 2009 Most Improved player, Brandon has also formed a foundation called "The Brandon Bass Reach Back Foundation," which he uses as a driving tool to improve his community. The Baton Rouge native has given TSAReport.com readers a little insight as to what drives the former SEC Player of the Year.

TSAReport.com- Hello Brandon, it's a new year, and the Mavericks are well into the season, what do you think about the team's overall productivity thus far?

Brandon Bass- I will say we have our ups and downs but we are constantly improving.

TSAReport.com- Many athletes set goals at the beginning of the season that they would like to accomplish, have you set any goals? If so, how is that going?

BB- My goal this year is to be the NBA's Most Improved Player. I think its going great! I'm on pace and working hard. Keep an eye out for me...

TSAReport.com- Recently Dallasnews.com talked about your minimal playing time and you responded as a true team player, stating "…it's going to benefit us as a group and us as a team." Your stats prove that you are an asset when on the court, so do you believe that patience will eventually be rewarded with more playing time as some believe you deserve?

BB- Yea, absolutely, I think so. I’m staying positive, staying ready and working hard. It shows that I am very productive in my playing time.

TSAReport.com- Do you have any personal New Year resolutions that you would like to share?

BB- To stay positive in my situation. Last year I had a break out year, but this year didn't start out as I wanted, so staying positive is key to overcoming everything that comes my way.

TSAReport.com- I hear you have a Foundation, tell us a little about?

BB- My Foundation is called "The Brandon Bass Reach Back Foundation" I created it last year to assist under-privileged youth in the Dallas area, and in my hometown of Baton Rouge, by providing them with programs and activities that will encourage and enhance their lives for a brighter future.

TSAReport.com- What inspired you to create your non-profit organization?

BB- Growing up in an disadvantaged community myself, there were no professional role models to look up to in my neighborhood. So being in a position that allows me to reach back and help those teens in need of educational inspiration and/or assistance is definitely a blessing.

TSAReport.com- What type of activities do your foundation host?

BB- I host many activities. From free basketball camps, to back to school supply drives, to providing college scholarships and more.

TSAReport.com- When you are not playing basketball, what do you do during your off time?

BB- I usually drive around in my car listening to music or in the studio writing music. It keeps me out of trouble and it’s a great hobby.

TSAReport.com- Do you or have you played any other sport?

BB- Nope, just basketball. It's my life.

TSAReport.com- Tell us something funny that no one knows about you?

BB- In high school, I took my basketball to the prom. It had a corsage and everything pinned to it. (laughs) Nah, I'm just joking, but I did take my basketball though.

TSAReport.com- When driving, which song do you find yourself repeating?

BB- Right now, I keep listening to "Everything" by Young Jeezy featuring Lil Boosie & Anthony Hamilton, because that's how I feel sometimes…

TSAReport.com- What don't you leave home without?

BB- My cell phone...that's my American Express (laughs)

TSAReport.com- What should your fans expect from you for the rest of the season?

BB- For me to give my all in every possession.

THE NY KNICKS ROOKIE IS BACK

I would love to win something with New York basketball because New York needs something like a basketball title.” - Danilo Gallinari, NY Knicks Forward

Words by Dave K. Far-El

The future of the NY Knicks took a turn for the better when 2008 lottery pick Danilo Gallinari returned to the rotation last month. Almost immediately, Gallinari showed the Madison Square Garden crowd glimpses of his highly-touted offensive capabilities that had the international and NBA scouts predicting greatness. When TSAReport spoke with Danilo and his father Vittorio, during the summer, Vittorio told us that having his son play in the NBA and for his former Italian teammate, Mike D’antoni “Is like a dream come true. I can’t believe it because Mike was my teammate for 9 years and you can’t imagine your son would be in New York being coached by Mike.” Vittorio feels that Danilo would be just fine coming from international play to the NBA. “He just needs time, to take his time. He doesn’t have to rush to adjust and find his way playing with the NBA rules and players.”

At the time, Danilo thought he’d be ready for training camp. “I’m optimistic about training camp, and to be part of the team for the training camp.” Unfortunately, that was not to be; but the rookie - or “the Rooster” as he was called back home in Italy - never stopped working towards a return. Unfortunately for Danilo, his back problems would delay him playing until mid January of the ’08-09 season.

Through his first 12 games since coming back, the #6 lottery pick is averaging a modest 6.2 pts and 2.5 rebounds per game. Not exactly eye-popping numbers for a lottery pick. Remember: it’s not the present that the Knicks drafted Gallinari for, it’s the future. The near future. As in 2010. That is when free agents like Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh will be available and the Knicks are preparing to hopefully land one or two of the big ticket superstars. Of course, by this time they expect that Gallinari will have than developed into the player they foresaw and should be an enticing piece of the team for prospective free agents to consider when deciding what team to sign with.

For now, like any rookie, Gallinari has shown a need to improve on the defensive end. In his debut against the Philadelphia Sixers, he found himself repeatedly on the wrong end of the scoring, including being dunked on by the high flying Andre Iguodala. To his credit, Gallinari was not deterred and made amends by using his feathery jump shot to his advantage on the offensive end, thus making himself a threat for the Knicks. Coach D’Antoni has used Gallinari late in game rotations, which was a surprise to some, but the kid has shown he is not afraid of taking it on the chin for the team. Although Danilo missed out on an opportunity to play in this year’s All Star Rookie vs. Sophmore challenge, if he continues playing the way he has recently, he can expect a call for next season’s All Star weekend as a “Sophmore.”

TSAReport and Danilo also spoke on what he would want people to think of him when his playing days for the Knicks are over. Danilo said he wanted to be "known as a player that did his best and I would love to win something with New York basketball because New York needs something like a basketball title.” You heard it here first, Danilo Gallinari is as important to the future of the Knicks franchise as anyone they may be able to sign in the off season of 2010. Yes, the NY Knicks rookie’s back and looking to take flight.

M.L.B’S BIGGEST LOSER…..M.L.B.

Words by Dave K. Far-El

Now that baseball fans and followers, as well as sports fans around the world, have had the opportunity to digest Alex Rodriguez as the latest MLB superstar to have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, the question must be asked: Now what?

With there supposedly being 103 players left on the failed drug test list from 2003, the drama is sure to continue. But here’s the interesting thing: 103 players with only 36 MLB teams means if you even it out that there were at least 3 players from every team that tested positive. A-Rod says it was very prevalent in the baseball culture back in 2001 when he first started using PED’s. He’s absolutely right. Seriously, how many of us that watch the sport can say we had no clue some of our favorite baseball players were using steroids?

If you look back on the era from the early 90’s to 2004, around the time when MLB stepped up it’s testing, many players physically resembled WWE wrestlers as opposed to MLB baseball players. I know I often wondered during the 90’s how Philadelphia Phillies lead off hitter Lenny Dykstra could continually get so muscular yet no one ever questioned if he was using steroids. Of course, I said all of this while watching him play and enjoying him as a lead off hitter. Commissioner Bud Selig is as responsible as the players for allowing things to go as far as it did. It’s pretty easy to admonish A-Rod when we all can be sure that there were tell tale signs that something was amiss in MLB. Not to mention the fact that some of these now “banned substances” were not even illegal until 2004.

And yes, the fans are guilty as well because we put up with it and cheered these men on when we knew something wasn’t right. Just think back to Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa’s epic homerun record chase. The two of them looked like linebackers taking hacks in a batting cage. Yet we, the fans, egged them on and begged them to continue to bash homeruns and chase the record. It appears to me that the executives of “America’s Game” got greedy and lost control of the monster they created both financially and physically. Probably the best thing Bud Selig and MLB can do now is release the names of the remaining 103 players and hope some of the players will come out on their own. The thing about all of it is, even if this happens, Bud Selig and MLB still has the same question to ask themselves, “Now What?”

I’LL SEE YOU IN COURT

Larry Izzo, captain of special teams for American football's New England Patriots, will testify at the perjury trial of US baseball home run king Barry Bonds, according to the Boston Globe. Izzo will testify that in 2003 he received performance-enhancing drugs and instructions on how to use them from Greg Anderson, Bonds' former trainer who was among those convicted in the BALCO steroid scandal, the report said. New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw has returned to a jail in Virginia to finish serving a 60-day jail sentence for a parole violation, his attorney said. Bradshaw reported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority in Tazewell County to complete his 60-day sentence imposed by a juvenile court judge last summer. Bradshaw, who served the first portion in June and July, was permitted to leave the jail to report to work as a member of the Giants under an agreement that he return Feb. 15. Michael Vick is suing his former financial adviser for at least $2 million, claiming she used his money for her personal and business expenses. The lawsuit accuses Mary Wong of Omaha, Neb., of fraud, breach of contract, negligence and other offenses. The lawsuit also names Williams and Bullocks, a company Wong co-owns with three NFL players: Demorrio Williams of the Kansas City Chiefs and twins Josh Bullocks of the New Orleans Saints and Daniel Bullocks of the Detroit Lions. The widow of Minnesota Vikings lineman Korey Stringer reached a settlement with the NFL over his heatstroke death during training camp in 2001. Under an agreement with Kelci Stringer, the NFL will support her efforts to create a heat illness prevention program. Kelci Stringer filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the league, claiming the NFL hadn’t done enough to ensure that equipment used by players protected them from injuries or deaths caused by heat-related illnesses. The man accused of being the mastermind behind a jewelry heist involving stolen New York Giants Super Bowl rings, Sean Murphy pleaded not guilty to breaking and entering, larceny and possession of burglar’s tools in Attleboro District Court. Police said he was the leader of a $2 million break-in at E.A. Dion Inc., an Attleboro jewelry manufacturer, in June. Police said they found a stolen Super Bowl ring in Murphy’s bedroom and 27 other rings in a safe deposit belonging to a woman authorities believe is his live-in girlfriend. A man who says he was shot by Indianapolis Colts receiver Marvin Harrison was convicted of a misdemeanor for lying to Philadelphia police about the shooting. A municipal court judge acquitted Dwight Dixon of two related misdemeanors after tossing out two of three statements he gave police, who had evicted Dixon’s lawyer from his hospital room after the shooting. Dixon, 32, initially told police his name was Malik Turner and that he was shot by two strangers who robbed him in West Philadelphia, several officers testified. Dixon had been shot in the hand and apparently struck in the head with a gun in the April 28 incident. Police took him from the hospital to a police station, where they interviewed him twice more. Dixon eventually told a homicide detective his real name and said he was shot at the North Philadelphia location, Detective Omar Jenkins testified. Police questioned Harrison soon after the shooting. He said he was at his car wash at the time of the shooting; that he knew Dixon; and that the two had been in a fist fight two weeks earlier after Dixon tried to bring a gun into a bar Harrison owns, according to Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham. Harrison said his gun had been at his suburban home the day of the shooting and that it had not been fired since he bought it, Abraham said. Police instead found the weapon at Harrison’s car wash a day after the shooting. Although prosecutors do not have enough evidence to charge anyone with the shooting, they will monitor depositions in Dixon’s civil case and the criminal case remains open. A federal judge says she might toss some of the strongest evidence against Barry Bonds, a blow to prosecutors trying to prove the home run king lied when he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston said her “preliminary thoughts” were to exclude from trial three 2000-2001 positive drug tests that prosecutors say belong to Bonds unless there is a direct link that the urine samples came from the former San Francisco Giants slugger. “If there’s no testimony to establish that, I don’t think any of them work,” Illston said. The only person who can do that seems to be Bonds’ personal trainer, Greg Anderson, who spent more than a year behind bars for refusing to speak to a federal grand jury investigating Bonds. And Anderson’s attorney, Mark Geragos, has said his client will not testify against Bonds at the trial, scheduled to start March 2. Former All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar has full-blown AIDS and insisted on having unprotected sex, his ex-girlfriend charged in a lawsuit, according to a report by the New York Daily News. In papers filed in state and federal court, Ilyna Dall said Alomar was finally tested in January 2006 while suffering from a cough, fatigue and shingles. “The test result of him being HIV-positive was given to him and the plaintiff on or about February 6, 2006.” Soon after, the couple went to see a disease specialist, who discovered a mass in the retired second baseman’s chest, the court papers stated. Alomar’s skin had turned purple, he was foaming at the mouth and a spinal tap “showed he had full-blown AIDS,” the suit said. Alomar, 41, who quit baseball over health issues in 2005, was unable to be reached by the Daily News for comment. Dall tested negative and they broke up last October. She is demanding at least $15 million in punitive damages, claiming Roberto Alomar caused her emotional distress and exposed her children to the virus. Miguel Tejada became the first high-profile player convicted of a crime stemming from baseball’s steroids era, pleading guilty in federal court to misleading Congress about the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Under a plea agreement with the same prosecutors pursuing a perjury indictment against Roger Clemens, Tejada admitted he withheld information about an ex-teammate’s use of steroids and human growth hormone when questioned by a House committee’s investigators in August 2005.

DID YOU KNOW

Antonio Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo, had their licenses revoked by the California State Athletic Commission after a hard foreign substance was found under the fighter's hand wraps before a January 24 bout. The Mexican fighter, some have now dubbed "Marga-cheato", did not enter the ring with the hard pads over his hands and US veteran Shane Mosley stopped Margarito in the ninth round to take the title. Capetillo claimed he accidentally padded the gloves but officials forced both men to reapply for reinstatement in one year and until then neither can work in the sport in any US venue due to reciprocity between states on bans. PETA has withdrawn an offer to televise an anti-dog-fighting public service announcement with Michael Vick after his release from prison. Previously, an agreement was reached between Vick’s representatives and the organization to shoot the spot, but Vick’s attorneys sought assurance from PETA that the group would support Vick’s return to the NFL. PETA is urging that Vick undergo a brain scan and a full psychiatric evaluation. Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin, current radio show host and tireless self-promoter has decided to add talent scout to his lengthening resume. Irvin will play host as a dozen “football neophytes”—guys whose dreams of playing in the NFL ran into one obstacle or another—vie for a guaranteed spot on the Dallas Cowboys’ 80-man training camp roster. Cowboys’ receiver Terrell Owens is taking his outsized personality to television. The NFL star is teaming up with VH1 for his own reality television show, which is to debut in July. In the series, Owens will be shadowed in the off-season by his best friends and publicists, Monique Jackson and Kita Williams. Randy Moss Motorsports has partnered with Toyota for the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. Randy Moss Motorsports, co-owned by New England Patriots star wide receiver Randy Moss, made its debut February 13 in the NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway. A lawyer for Michael Vick told a federal bankruptcy judge that the imprisoned NFL star could be transferred to a halfway house in Virginia any day. The judge presiding over Vick’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case asked about the transfer during a hearing at which he also approved procedures to sell some of the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback’s property. NBA Players Association officials filed a grievance on behalf of Jamaal Tinsley, an Indiana Pacer point guard who has not played or practiced all season. Tinsley was involved in several controversial off-court incidents and the Pacers have indicated he is not in their plans as they try for a trade deal for Tinsley, who has two years and 14.7 million dollars remaining on his contract. Larry Bird, the retired NBA legend who is the Pacers president, said Indiana is trying to swing a deal, reportedly with the Charlotte Bobcats. Kobe Bryant became the youngest player in NBA history to score 23,000 points (30 years, 171 days old). The previous fastest person to the milestone in NBA history was Wilt Chamberlain, who did it in 30 years, 176 days. The NFL Players Association is stepping up its support for embattled New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress. The NFLPA submitted legal briefs on behalf of Burress in his fight to prevent the Giants from recouping money from the wide receiver following his accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound in late November. Spokesman Carl Francis confirmed to PA SportsTicker the actions taken by the players union, which relate to the Giants’ contention that Burress defaulted on his contract. The NFLPA also is fighting the withholding of payment of certain provisions in the wide receiver’s contract. The union had filed a separate grievance against the Giants on Burress’ behalf, challenging the team’s suspension and fine levied against him. Jeremy Lusk, an American freestyle motocross rider, died of head injuries after crashing while trying to land a back flip in competition. He was 24. Jorge Ramirez, chief of the intensive care unit at Calderon Hospital, said Lusk suffered severe brain damage and a possible spinal cord injury. He was injured when he failed to complete a full rotation while attempting a Hart Attack back flip and slammed headfirst into the dirt. An unauthorized and highly anticipated book about Alex Rodriguez is coming out a month sooner than planned. Publication of Selena Roberts’ “A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez” has been moved up from May 19 to April 14 as scrutiny builds on the New York Yankees slugger after he acknowledged using banned substances from 2001-2003 while playing for the Texas Rangers.
