NBA 2K9 ACTION IS FANTASTIC
Words by Dave K. Far-El
“It feels good to be ‘The Peoples’ Champ.’ It’s a good fit for me...” - Kevin Garnett
Recently, TSAReport.com was invited to attend the 2K Sports’ Xbox NBA 2K9 launch party. I was once a big video game person, then one day in 2006, I decided to toss away my PlayStation 2. After attending the launch party and playing this game, I’m back in the video game fold. I plan to buy an Xbox 360 as soon as possible. The launch party hosted a bevy of celebrity athletes. Most notably, Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo of the world champion Boston Celtics, Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia Sixers, Nate Robinson, Patrick Ewing Jr. and Quentin Richardson of the NY Knicks, Brook Lopez of the NJ Nets, and 2008 Olympic gold medal sprint Usain Bolt. Everyone that played or watched the game became enamored with the computer generated players life-like movements and body control. For instance, when the video game Ron Artest of the Houston Rockets fell down after being fouled, he actually rolled over on the floor the way Ron does in real games. The players shoot like they actually shoot in real life.
NBA 2K9 has special features that allow the gamer to play in the legendary Entertainer’s Basketball Classic at Rucker Park in NYC. Of course it comes with the usual bevy of one on one games, the opportunity to play with past All-Star Teams or historical Championship teams.
The ambiance inside of the actual lounge area was sweet; there were smaller monitors in every corner with the game connected. Of course I decided to play on one of the two HUGE screens and lo and behold to my surprise, Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia Sixers stepped up and grabbed the other controller. It was game time. As I would find out later, I was just a warm up for Mr. Iguodala because he went on to whip me. (Ed. Note: for the record, it really wasn’t a fair match up, because like most athletes I know, all they do in their spare time is play video games like NBA 2K8, etc. and Andre Iguodala is no different). Later in the evening 2K Sports held a video game tournament which included Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett and Andre Iguodala. Before he got on to play teammate Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo acknowledged he had yet to play the game and was rather eager to see himself in animated NBA action. Needless to say, K.G. took an “L” to his teammate Rondo. Rondo destroyed K.G.
After his loss to Rondo, K.G. told TSAReport.com that despite his loss in the video game tournament, “It feels good to be ‘The Peoples’ Champ.’ It’s a good fit for me.”, he said with a wide grin. When asked about the upcoming season and a chance at a Celtics repeat, K.G. replied, “In our Atlantic division, the Sixers got better, and Toronto got better, plus our division was tough to begin with but even more now (in regards to a repeat), it’s real serious but I’m looking forward to the challenge.” No guarantees there! Rajon Rondo then had to play Philadelphia Sixer Andre Iguodala in the championship round after Andre beat one of the members of the rap group Cool Kids, who actually perform the theme song “2K Pennies” and are featured in the playground games. It was Andre Iguodala playing with the Sixers no less, versus Rajon Rondo playing with the Celtics. Andre Iguodala, after a hard fought game came out the victor and the champion of the 2K Sports NBA 2K9 championship video game tournament. As a Sixers fan, I can only hope that’s the turn out in real life. The evening was great, the game is even greater. So it looks like I better get to writing more articles so I can save up and purchase my Xbox 360, because NBA 2K9 awaits!!!
"I feel like if we stay healthy enough to go get into the AFC championships, then we are going to win the Super Bowl..." - Antonio Cromartie
"I didn't start until the ninth game of last years 2007-2008 season, finished the season out with ten interceptions, had the longest play in NFL history, I mean what else? What else you wanna put on my resume, I think my resume speaks for itself." After a remarkable 2007-2008 season, what more could we possibly expect from the San Diego Chargers' Pro-Bowler? Well, when asked, the charismatic cornerback responded: "I can't tell you, you just gotta watch [laughs] I might get 15 [interceptions], I might break a record." Although starting late in the season, the 2006 19th overall draft pick returned a missed field goal of 109 yards for a touchdown, which set a NFL record that many feel will never be broken. Antonio Cromartie - who is the cousin of former major league outfielder Warren Cromartie of the Montreal Expos and Kansas City Royals, and 2008 16th overall draft pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie of the Arizona Cardinals - comes from a very athletic and talented family. Often compared to Deion "Primetime" Sanders, he is very humbled and honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as one of the NFL's greatest. In addition, the Tallahassee native also had three multi-pick games during the season, one shy of the NFL single season record. "I expect a lot out of my team, we went to the AFC championship game last year. We had a lot of injuries, so that's probably one of the reasons why we couldn't do what we wanted to do, so I feel like if we stay healthy enough to go get into the AFC championships, then we are going to win the Super Bowl." To be so confident with himself and his team, it is obvious that Antonio has a couple of tricks up his sleeve to exceed last year's success. However, just as he mentioned earlier, Cromartie /San Diego Chargers fans must stay tuned to this football season.
"On top of the fact that this sport is so difficult and being able to pull that off would be great..."- Jimmie Johnson
The NCAA has March Madness and the Bowl Championship Series. Major League Baseball has the World Series. The NBA and NFL have playoffs. And now NASCAR has its own end of year series for the championship. Since the 2004 season, The Sprint Cup Series – also know as the ‘Chase for the Sprnt Cup’ – has marked a change in the scoring of NASCAR. Although fairly new, The Chase is extremely competitive and forces the teams to perform at their best during all parts of the season. With four of the twelve races completed, two-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson sits atop the leaderboard. TSAReport.com was able to catch up with the upbeat California natives as he shared his thoughts on the 2008 Cup Race thus far.
“If it happens, I’m not sure if I’m prepared to deal with those emotions yet, but I’m sure I will be ecstatic with it all. It will mean a lot to be able to do that. On top of the fact that this sport is so difficult and being able to pull that off would be great but it’s weeks away and there’s no telling what’s going to happen between here and there” was Johnson’s response when asked about the possibility of a repeat. Johnson’s current position is no shocker to NASCAR viewers and his fans, for he is the only driver to finish in the top five during his first five seasons The thirty-three year old also ranks second among all active drivers with an average of 4.5 wins per season.
He does, however, acknowledge how difficult that may prove to be: “Wins are a lot hard work. If we’re not right in the past we spend a lot of time making our cars better and our pit stops as good as they can be, I just say it’s hard work. The competition is just getting tougher and tougher, but we have three guys in the chase that can turn around and keep the championship at home.” One of those guys is teammate and Number 48 car owner Jeff Gordon, whom he beat out for the Cup last year. “Jeff and I, as tough as it was, we had to had an open book policy. Its hard when your fighting that guy for the championship. It’s a great problem to have and we hope to be in that situation again. We have to work together, because if were not doing it to the best of our ability the next team is and they gonna beat you.”
Still in all, when talking about who he sees holding the Chase Trophy in November, the optimistic driver laughingly states, “I tell you how I want it to go. I want it to be the number 48, but we’ll have to see.”
