We here at TSAReport.com find ourselves in constant debate about numerous topics in today’s world of sports.  For this reason, we have asked our columnist Dave K. Far-El to share a few of his many views in this months issue.  Dave gives his thoughts on the big, so called “Rivalry,” between the Lakers and the Celtics.  Deion “Prime Time” Sanders-was he the greatest? Mixed Martial Arts, is mainstream America ready for it to be on prime time television? TSAReport.com has left this issue open for discussion.  Please send all comments to comments@tsareport.com.

Well, it's early June and that must mean the NBA Finals is upon us. Seems like the playoffs started months ago, NBA, TNT, ESPN and ABC sure like to milk the ratings don’t they? Let's see, my boy Sheeeeeeeeed Wallace and the Pistons fell to the Celtics and Mr. Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs fell to Kobe and the Lakers. Everyone is now nostalgic for the Lakers/Celtics rivalries from days far gone. Funny thing is, during my generation, the eighties, The Lakers and the Celtics did not really have a rivalry. Last time I checked, a rivalry was both teams being evenly matched. If I'm correct, which I am, Magic and the Lakers beat and won more titles than Larry Bird and his Celtics. So I wouldn’t call that a rivalry at all. Moving along, this series will be interesting to say the least. Being a Sixers fan, I cannot possibly root for the Celtics, and am in no hurry to root for the Lakers either. But, biases aside, I pick the Lakers in six. Why you ask? It's simple, this series will finally show that Kobe is no LeBron James; it will show they are not even in the same league. Not to mention karma. The way I see it, the Celtics hired mercenaries in Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. They were supposed to get to the Finals. They had better get to the finals with the team they signed up. Not to mention Minnesota Timberwolves GM Kevin McHale gift-wrapping KG for McHale’s old teammate Danny Ainge who is GM of the Celtics. Of course some would say Memphis did the same with L.A. by trading them Pau Gasol for a bag of peanuts and a pack of loose cigarettes. But in my humble opinion, any decent, reputable big man would help Kobe get over the top because Kobe is just that damn good. The X-factor in this series is going to be Lamar Odom and how he handles going against Paul Pierce. If Lamar Odom steps up big time, which should be easy considering no one is pressuring him to be the number 2 go-to-guy anymore, it should be an easy Lakers six game victory. If he doesn’t, the series will go seven and then anything can happen as we all know. Once the Lakers win, then my next dilemma will be: do I bestow upon Kobe Bryant the same respect that I give to other multiple championship winners? Which is the ominous "Mr. Brady" In New England, Tom Brady with his multiple Superbowl wins, is now "Mr." Brady and in San Antonio, Tim is "Mr. Duncan” having won titles with three different generations of Spurs. And Shaq is always, always known as "Diesel" and if I have to explain his accomplishments on the court then there is a problem. I haven’t decided yet how I will call upon Kobe if he does win, but if things go how I predict, it wont be "loser." Yes, the Lakers will win the NBA Finals in six games. You read it here first.

IS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS TOO MUCH FOR PRIME TIME TV?

Column by Dave K. Far-El
On May 31st 2008, CBS aired a primetime mixed martial arts contest by Elite XC. Three bouts were aired and the main event was one-time Youtube backyard fighter Kimbo Slice taking on MMA veteran James Thompson. The debate ever since is whether or not an event of this magnitude should air on "free" network TV such as CBS during the prime time hours.  Before I add my two cents, let me make it clear that I am a huge fan of the WWE and I enjoy any good boxing match. I remember watching Japanese Pride Fights and early UFC matches and thought they were all pretty gory to say the least. Guys getting their noses twisted to the opposite of their faces, gashes and injuries so severe that it was a wonder they would ever fight again and so on. These were times when there seemed to be no rules, although I have seen rule and safety changes over the years leading all the way up to the Elite XC match. They have made the combatants safer in a sense, but the brutality of it all is still there. For instance, did you see the way Kimbo busted James Thompson's ear open? Pretty gruesome. This all brings us back to the days of the Roman "gladiators" in the coliseums, much like WWE, TNA wrestling or any boxing event. The difference is that WWE is not as "real;" meaning the intent to hurt someone to win a match is not there because the winner is pre-determined and the matches and wrestlers are so over the top that a viewer knows not to believe all that they see. With boxing, the rules are obvious and the potential financial payoff is much more significant than UFC or Elite XC or any other MMA competition at this time. So the financial pros outweigh the physical cons. Extreme fighting appears to be just that, extreme. When a guy looks beat up, bloody and worse for wear, he usually is beat up, bloody and worse for wear. There are no blood packs like WWE or TNA wrestling. There is no major payday for a headliner such as Kimbo Slice, I doubt if Kimbo made a third of what boxing headliners like Floyd Mayweather make. But I do know he got more than a third of the physical beating that Mayweather takes in a boxing match. Remember, this CBS event was pushed mainly on the strength of Kimbo Slice and his fanbase. Now, having said all of that, I do not feel there is anything wrong with airing Mixed Martial Arts competitions during primetime. After all, this is a society that likes to indulge itself in reality shows that show a person's life crumbling apart – and one can turn on the news on any given night and hear and see the same type of violence. We have the Internet age where people will record and show anything. The culture of this country seems to thrive off of violence, so why make MMA fans suffer by being hypocritical and not airing Kimbo Slice beating the crap out of somebody?

PRIME TIME-THE GREATEST

Column by Dave K. Far-El

One night while sitting home watching Deion's Sanders reality TV show, "Deion and Pilar: Prime Time Love," on the Oxygen channel, I began to think about  Deion "Prime Time" Sanders the football player. If one can get past all of the ESPN highlights and his supposed showboating, you may come to the conclusion that Deion Sanders is possibly the best NFL player of the modern generation. With all due respect to Daryl Green, Deion was the best at his cornerback position during his 13-year career, amassing 53 interceptions. Deion was one of the only defensive players I have ever seen stop a team from even attempting to move the ball in his direction. I recall watching many Dallas Cowboys games and opposing quarterbacks would not even throw the ball near him. As great as players like Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary and Reggie White were defensively, teams would still attempt to run the ball in their direction, but not Deion. Deion was consistently an All-Pro in punt and kick off returns, not to mention as a Dallas Cowboy he would often line up in the slot receiver position as the second or third option behind Michael Irvin. Who, in my opinion, was the greatest receiver of our time. Jerry Rice you say? Well if Deion is the best CB and he shut down Rice on a regular basis, but could not handle Micheal "The Playmaker" Irvin then wouldn’t that make Irvin the better of the two receivers. Some have argued Gayle Sayers to me but he was not the four-way threat that Deion was. To put the finishing touches on my rant, "Prime Time" was as much an off the field presence as he was on the field. Having stated my case, I could be wrong but I doubt it.

Major League Baseball is making a $10 million donation to “Stand Up to Cancer,” a fundraising charity for cancer research, said commissioner Bud Selig.  “Some people might regard this as a responsibility. I regard it as a privilege,” he said of baseball’s becoming involved with the fundraising.  ABC, CBS and NBC each have allotted a prime-time hour on Sept. 5 to simulcast a fundraiser.  Organizers and the American Association for Cancer Research will decide how to distribute the money.
